Warming your bones

In a direct contradiction to John’s winter riding across Europe, Stuart Bennett travelled to the warmth of a museum in Spain.

Next time you holiday on the Costa Blanca, and you tire of the sun, the sand and the sangria, why not leave the coast and venture a few miles (or kilometres) inland from Benidorm? There is another world to explore, and set in the beautiful valley of the River Guadalest is a gem of a historic vehicles museum.

There are more than 140 motorbikes, together with some exotic microcars, the like of which I would bet you have never seen before!

An eclectic mix of machinery, with no restriction from barriers – meaning that bikes such as the glorious Henderson can undergo some close scrutiny!

There are some 50 different manufacturers represented, dating from the ‘20s to the ‘70s, all restored to working order, and displayed in a huge area, with no restrictions on photography or fondling!

Naturally, most of the machinery on display is continental in origin, but a few British marques are in evidence, and in prominent positions to boot!

Or how about a BMW armoured sidecar outfit?

With sidecar wheel drive, and complete with machinegun mount, this has, fortunately, never seen action, and was apparently one of a batch left behind by the Germans, at the end of the war. If your taste is more agricultural, there are several scooter-derived farm carts on view, and an amazing range of ‘bubblecars’.
