Supermarket visit ends with BSA Starfire prize

Stephen Earl from Stamford, Lincolnshire, couldn’t believe his luck when he became the winner of a 1970 BSA Starfire in an exclusive Asda-backed Classic Bike Guide magazine competition.

The 48-year-old single-cylinder machine has been tastefully restored, upgraded and modified to suit modern riding conditions, and Stephen said: “When my wife said she wanted to go to Asda to look at clothes, I went to look at the magazines. CBG is one of my regular buys, and although I rarely enter competitions, the Starfire took my eye – and when I found out I‘d won it, my happiness was surpassed only by when I actually rode it.”

Stephen Earl (in BSA T-shirt) collects his fully restored and upgraded 1970 BSA Starfire from Asda staff at North Hykeham.

Made from 1968 until 1970, it replaced the 1967 Barracuda after only one year. The engine of the CBG example was rebuilt with a new crank and connecting rod, and a piston from a Triumph Speed Twin machined to fit the bored barrel. It also has a new Amal carburettor, electronic ignition and an oil-filter modification to improve reliability.
