The funeral of Stephen John Goddard – otherwise known as Herman – on Friday, November 16, 2018 was a major event in the old motorbike scene.
Steve, who was about to go to the last Kempton Park autojumble with his stall the day he suddenly passed away, was cremated at Braintree. His funeral cortege was led by his wife Barbara on his favourite bike and about 50 other motorbikes followed.
His bike, a lovely restored crimson Rocket III, was parked in the chapel beside Steve’s BSA emblazoned coffin. Afterwards a gathering was held at the Sudbury Delphi Club, hosted by Barbara with the marvellous refreshments provided by friends of the family.

Steve had grown up in the local bike scene in Sudbury in the ‘70s and was formerly a rep for the National Chopper Club. Did he chop any delectable classic bikes which he would later regret?
As well as time racing with the pre-‘65 scrambling club he became more and more involved in the old bike world, trading as Steve’s Classics, spending time out in the country (and sometimes overseas) finding, fixing and rehoming bikes and parts for more than 20 years.
The size of his send-off and the lovely stories that were told showed how much he meant to his family, his old-time biker friends and everyone else who knew him.
Steve will be sorely missed.
