Moving house – with a sidecar outfit

A friend recently sent me a number of photographs of old motorcycles dating from the early part of the last century, some of which readers might find very interesting, as I certainly did.

During the First World War, Noel Kempe is seen with his mother Ellen riding pillion on AE 1312 at Aislaby, near Whitby. Ellen was widowed in 1915, but continued living at St Martin’s, which became a convalescent home during that war.

The photo of folk moving furniture with a combination is of particular interest – how times have changed!

Several of the bikes have their numberplates displayed, and I wonder if anyone has the time and inclination to determine whether any of them still survives.
