Golden year ahead for Trident & Rocket 3 Owners’ Club

As the TR3OC celebrates the 50th anniversary of the legendary Triumph and BSA triples, Roy Maddox outlines the club’s history and tells of its plans for this very special year.

Formed in 1979, The Trident and Rocket 3 Owners’ Club covers the three-cylinder road and racing machines produced both by Triumph and BSA between 1968 and 1976, along with specials that are related clearly to the original machines.

The TR3OC’s own prototype Triumph Trident, which had been on display at the London Motorcycle Museum, won this special rosette for being the machine of the most technical interest at a Newark Winter Classic event.

With its membership split 70% UK and 30% worldwide, the club’s claim to be truly international is no idle boast.

Before production of the triples came to an end in 1976, a total of 33,228 machines were produced, made up of 5897 BSA Rocket 3s from 1968 until 1972; 19,179 Triumph Trident 150s from 1968 until 1974; 7104 Triumph Trident T160s from 1975 until 1977, and 1048 Triumph X75 Hurricanes in 1973.

The TR3OC organises many of its own events as well as participating in many classic gatherings organised by others.

The most important objective stated in its charter is “To encourage the continued and regular use of these machines and the ongoing construction, development and use of specials and race versions.”

This year will be special for the club, which holds regular meetings and has area representatives throughout the UK and the world, for it marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of these legendary triples.

To mark the celebration, the club has set itself an ambitious target of recruiting a new member every day throughout the year.

Membership costs only £30 for 12 months. For that, many benefits are available and you don’t even have to own a Trident or Rocket 3 to join. There are also five-year-term membership rates and associate memberships.
