Founders’ Day 2019


Having an event at the same venue, on the same weekend each year, gives a temptation for folk to assume that the event will always be the same as the year before, yet Ian Kerr discovers that this isn’t always the case!

The danger with any annual event is that, after a few years, people tend to give it a miss because the event becomes stale and, besides, there is always next year!

However, The Taverners section of the VMCC seems to avoid that happening with its annual Founders’ Day event, set in the scenic grounds of Stanford Hall near Rugby, each year attracting between three and four thousand visitors.

The expansive parking area held an impressive number of interesting machines.

While the predicted heatwave did not bless the late July event with its presence, the day was predominantly warm, and the threatening rain clouds did hold off, allowing the enthusiastic crowd to enjoy the day in relative comfort.

And which side do you dress sir?

As the Taverners’ own excellent website proudly proclaims: “Founders’ Day has become one of the major UK events in the old bike calendar”, and it is hard to argue with that statement.

“Having started nearly 50 years ago, with just a hundred or so visitors viewing a few pasting tables full of parts being sold by those wishing to make space in their garages, nowadays the autojumble aspect of the event has several hundred pitches crammed with every aspect of vintage/classic motorcycling for sale, along with a few other collectables too.”
