BMW Airhead Fellowship plans its most ambitious event so far

The BMW Airhead Fellowship, a non-profit-making organisation run by Peter Ardron and dedicated to keeping as many air-cooled ‘R’-series BMWs as possible on the road, is planning an ambitious event at the Lincolnshire Showground in aid of the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance from July 13-15.

Unique in the history of the BMW vintage and classic movement, the event will be an attempt to get as many older BMWs and their riders together to share in a celebration of the historic design, the basic concept of which ran from 1923 until 1996.

Air-cooled BMW motorcycles spanned the years from 1923 until 1996, and many of them – like this immaculate R51B3 – will be represented at the BMW Airhead Fellowship’s big and ambitious event at the Lincolnshire Showground from July 13-15.

Peter said: “We’re trying to appeal to everyone, not just those who like rallies, so although there will be ride-outs and other typical rally-type activities, it will be more than a normal rally.

“For a start we’ve got Hans Muth, chief designer at BMW during the 1970s and the man responsible for machines such as the R90S, R100RS, R100RT and R65LS. He’ll be explaining the philosophy behind his design concepts at BMW and making himself generally available for autographs and photos, or just to chat with people.

“We’ve also arranged for the ‘holy trinity’ of the adventure bike world – Elspeth Beard, Sam Manicom and Ted Simon – to be there for talks, book signings and so on. It’ll be the first time the three have been together at such a gathering, and their stories are sure to make compulsive listening.”
