Jigging around
By: Tim Britton
A jig to hold an engine or gearbox in place while working on it is a very useful thing, so we'd like to see your take on it.
A pair of empty cases are easier to use for testing the jig to make sure it's ready...
In the latest Old Bike Mart we featured the editor’s almost universal, if such a thing can be said, engine jig. Anyone who has attempted to do even the slightest task on an engine, or gearbox for that matter, while it’s flopping around loose on the bench will appreciate the benefits of a jig to hold the thing in place.
After two or three comments on the jig feature and people telling us about their variations of the theme we thought it would be a good idea to ask you to send us your jig pics for this web page. Now then, the criteria…
Obviously the easy route is to use one of the superb commercially available jigs that are out there but, where’s the fun in that? What we like to see is OBM readers being creative and showing their take on the jig theme. It doesn’t matter how simple or complicated the jig is, just that you’ve made most of it yourself – for instance, the OBM editor is quite capable of cutting and drilling metal but not welding it together. Okay? Good, so, remember to tell us who you are and what the jig is for and maybe after a suitable period of time, we’ll be able to find a T-shirt or something for the best one, in the opinion of an independent judge.
