Cellulose – a reprieve?
According to the FHBVC, DEFRA is unlikely to introduce the licensing scheme for ‘non compliant’ vehicle refinishing products and domestic paints until at least mid summer.
However they are taking seriously the proposal that cellulose and non compliant coach enamel should be classified as ‘special finishes’ – which would obviate the need for a licensing scheme as far as vehicle paints are concerned. At the time of writing, they were planning a meeting with experts from the British Coatings Federation to discuss details. The FHBVC commends DEFRA for, whilst being scrupulously correct in following their obligations under the law, they have done everything in their power to support the arguments of the FHBVC which are – to give strong support to their application, through FIVA, to the European Commission for a derogation to allow the continued sale of non compliant products for use on historic vehicles, then ensuring that the UK government would give effect to that derogation and finally, supporting their case that the mechanism for activating the derogation should be simple.
Coventry museum success

The museum displays the largest collection of British road transport in the world, is open everyday except the Christmas period and admission is free. See www.transport-museum.com
National Rally
The 75th National Road Rally is planned for 5-6 July. As ever there will be controls dotted around the country with everyone ending up at the final control point at Bletchley Park. The Daytime Rally takes in the controls around your locality – and don’t go as far as Bletchley. The National Sunrise Rally however, does. Bronze award is 299 miles and the Silver and Gold are more demanding, but all end up at Bletchley. There are several awards such as best solo, sidecar, scooter, services rider, team etc. Details and entry forms from Alison Devine on 01788 566400 or check out www.nationalroadrally.co.uk
AJS sliding gears
Bob Dixon, from Bicester, has commissioned Nova Racing Transmissions to make him a pair of sliding gears for his 1926/7 350cc side valve AJS. The new gears are thicker than stock, being 12.6mm wide and have a radiused lead on each side of each involute tooth, to aid meshing. They will be made of heat treated EN36. Naturally, the more sets made, the cheaper the sets become because the machine tools will already be set up, so if anyone else is interested in a pair, then they should contact Nova proprietor Graham Dyson directly on 01733 210082.
Free insurance from Guzzi
