Motorcycle entitlement - The Ministry replies

Department for Transport Letter - Old Bike Mart Newspaper - Click here to read the reply...

A couple of issues back we ran a story about the motorcycle entitlement being removed from licences returned to the DVLA for alterations.

After trying to get a straight answer we jotted a letter to Geoff Hoon as Transport Minister. The reply came from Paul Clark - Under Secretary for State at the Department for Transport - and it makes interesting reading.

From the editor

Wow! What a fuss we caused with the lead story from last OBM, it turns out that the ‘lost entitlements’ on licences is far from an isolated incident and there are a number of cases on the go. What concerns most people though is that the DVLA will not say what constitutes proof of the entitlement being on there in the first place. They offer suggestions of documents that might help a claim but no proof. It’s a little like ‘guilty until proved innocent’ but with no clear indication of how to prove innocence. That seems to be the way officialdom works these days and the frustration of the public when faced with a bureaucratic organisation seemingly hell bent on getting rid of motorcyclists is understandable.
