This month..
I was reading recently the editorial comment in one of my colleague’s magazines and he made reference to the almost illiterate wording and spelling on some of the descriptions which go with items offered for sale on the internet auction site, and that such things make him wary of the products being offered.

No doubt like many of you out there, I’ve bought a few things on said auction site, you know, the odd Rolling Stones vinyl LP, water butt, Doc Mart boots – bad move, another story – and sold a few too, horse harness, oak barrel etc, but generally with such everyday things, they make little money and you’ve pretty much got to be prepared to effectively give them away, though naturally sometimes you get lucky.

Now you’ll probably say ‘well he would say that wouldn’t he’ but I still feel the likes of Old Bike Mart is the place to flog your old motorcycle bits because it hits straight at the heart of the people who need them. Indeed, I have never failed to sell anything advertised in OBM, yes, I’ve missed a few – because we’re not allowed to get to the adverts before you, but that’s how it goes, sometimes you get unlucky, but listen to this.

A while ago I bought a drum kit for my lad, on the auction site, and made the mistake of collecting it at night. In the cold light of day, it wasn’t as good as I’d hoped and I had to spend a few bob extra on it to make it good. I reckoned I’d been done but as I’ve often quoted in the past ‘caveat emptor’. So be it. Eventually he upgraded and with the kit surplus I put it back on the auction site, needing to clear £150 to break even.

Twice it failed to make reserve, so I put it in the miscellaneous column in OBM and sold it instantly, indeed I could have sold it four times more! So there you have it, the internet’s fine but never underestimate the power of Old Bike Mart!

Hope you all enjoyed the Stafford Show, there’ll be a full report next time.
