We’re all different

Tim BrittonWELL, there’s no doubt about it, the new look Old Bike Mart has certainly had an effect on the postbox. Some like it, some don’t, some like parts of it and then again some dislike other parts. I think if we’d come out and said that a certain bike – and no I’m not going to pick out a make – was the ultimate vintage, veteran or classic we’d have caused less fuss than altering the ‘paper’, ‘book’, ‘comic’ or whatever term you describe OBM by.

Actually this diversity is quite encouraging as it goes to prove we’re all different because if we weren’t then it would be a boring world wouldn’t it? Just imagine if we were all fans of Norabsajamatriukettes for instance… there’d be no ‘my bike’s better than yours’ discussions as we’d all agree with each other. No handling issues of one marque over another, no styling discussions over whose machine is the best looking and… well, you get the picture. Anyway, keep the letters coming.

On a personal note, change happens quite regularly in The Basement as the 650cc Triumph, that’s been part of my motorcycling life for nearly 30 years, has had to change into a scrambler recently. It was needed for track duty in Cumbria and the change ‘to’ scrambles mode was quite easy. It didn’t take long for the electrics, road tyres and number plate to leave the bike and end up on the shelving in The Basement.

The only problem I’ve got now is the MoT is due and our local tester, quite rightly, frowns on out and out moto-cross knobblies when doing the official test so I’ve to change it all back to road spec again before I head off to the testing station. It’s never quite so easy to change back as the parts that flew off with remarkable ease a few weeks ago now seem to have ‘morphed into bits from another bike and are determined not to fit the one they came off.
